Drawing to the end of the seasons straw bale shoots, the organisers of Caynham Clay shoot certainly no how to put on such an event. Week’s earlier competitors were informed by personal letter of the event, probably due to the registration at the event the previous year. No shortage of helpers and with Roy Gudrat overseeing the shooting layouts it ran like clockwork.

 An Overcast afternoon with a stiff breeze and the forecast rain staying away saw competitors from a wide area attend. With a good turnout DTL shooters with a long wait were catered for by an excellent refreshment tent with chairs and tables being positioned close by. The testing pool and sporting layouts keeping busy all afternoon.

 With shooting over and scores in the overall winner and taking the Cup was Geoff Pearson with his joint score of 29 in the sporting sharing the honours with Julian Morris and Peter Humphries and joint first in the DTL with Geoff Seaborne, Ian Palmer, Chris Moule, Richard Millichamp, Alan Brooks, Roy Gudrat, John Ward and Paul Cerri.

 Amongst the winning ladies and junior shooters were Jess Moore (ladies) and Owen Huffer (junior) taking the DTL and Linda Palmer (ladies) and Owen Huffer (juniors) taking sporting.

On the weekend of 8th May St Mary’s Clay Pigeon Association once again staged their annual three day competition in aid of St Michaels Hospice Hereford. The venue this year was by kind permission of Major Hereford at ‘The Barn’, home ground of Checkley Clays.

On the Friday afternoon the main event was the 40 bird Sporting Team Competition which was won by I Palmer, R Gudrat, R Morris and A Keylock with a very creditable 146 ex 160. Second place, just one clay behind, went to D Evans, J Kendal, J Morris and S Nutbeam. G Ingram, K McGuire, L Williams and P Jones were third with 134.

The Pool on Friday was shared between S Nutbeam and D Evans who both shot 10 ex10.

Saturday was dry but very windy which made it an exceptional effort by M Pugh who straighted the 40 Bird Individual Sporting event. R Gudrat, C Moule and D Evans were joint second with 38 and B Davies, P Humphries, P Searles and J Kendal followed on 37.

The D.T.L. competition was won by I Reeves who was the only one to take maximum score in the shoot-off.

C Moule won the Pool and P Serles took the Gamekeeper prize. After an exciting shoot-off I Palmer was the outright winner on the High Pheasant.

On the last day of the event the wind had dropped and the conditions were ideal. The 50 Bird Flush competition was won by the team of I Palmer, C Moule and A Keylock with a maximum score. Second place went to J Evans, R Morris and A Keylock.

Sundays D.T.L. top prize was shared between P Humphries, R Gudrat and R Morris who all had maximum in the shoot off.

The Pool Shoot was also won with a maximum score from R Gudrat and C Moule.

The organisers wish to thank all the sponsors of this popular event and of course a big thank you to the guns who unfailingly turn up to support this most worthy cause.

Charity Shoot at Brecon 3 May 2009

 Amidst the spectacular scenery of the Beacons National Park the annual charity shoot took place to raise funds for Cancer Research Wales- Brecon & Sennybridge branch.

Organised by Brian (Butch) Keylock his wife Lorna, family and friends.

 This was the 20th time Butch and his team had put on such an event and with just a small tear in his eye said afterwards that this was going to be the last event to be held on such a grand scale by the Keylock family, although they would continue to support it.

 For those of you who have not attended one of these events the day is as follows:

 Shooters contest in 30 bird sporting, 10 DTL and a pool shoot. After the shooting is rapped up every one is invited down to the farm for the annual curry, pork roll and free drink from the bar followed by presentation of prizes, auction and draw.

 With presentation of shooting prizes finished the event moved onto more fundraising …the Auction. Butch conducts this like a pro and light heartedly announced any people talking while proceedings are taking place could be taken for a bid!  All auction prizes had been donated and amongst them some certainly caught the eye:

A day’s game shooting for gun and guest,

Meal for two at a top local restaurant,

Hand crafted shooting stick,

Various bottles of top boxed spirits,

Air rifle, just to mention a few but surely the annual Chocolate cake attracts most attention being donated by a specialist confectioner, its weight was 10lb, measured 2.5ft round and was over 5000 cals per slice. This sold for £355! Butch recalls in a past event how a 3 tier 22lb cake made £585. Between auction items the draw takes place with what seems to be a never ending list of prizes.

During proceedings a big thank you was made to all the many people who helped to make the event possible including:

The land owners;

Pete (Cutter) Davies traps and helpers for the sporting layouts;

John Henry Thomas (Nelson Shooting Ground) DTL trap and organisation;

John Butland (Woodland Park shooting ground Brecon) pool set up;

 The army camp for the curry, ladies who served it up and the bar staff.

 Events were wound up by Butch declaring drinks at the bar were free.

 During the 20 years of the event a staggering £43,500 has been raised for charity.

 Photos show some of the event competitors receiving their prizes, including. Anne butler, Roy Gudrat, Dorian Williams, and Jamie Rush

Here are the results of the above shoot held on Sat 18 April put on by Pete Davies and his ever faithful helpers.
